Hi Ya'll,
I just joined this tribe and I've very happy to be here.
I'm wondering where ya'll picked up saying ya'll from?
I'm from Wisconsin.. round here not many people say ya'll. When I was traveling in Oregon 3 years ago, I met a girl from Texas who was so awsome we stuck like glue.. and she always said ya'll. So in a matter of days it rubbed off on me and I've been useing it ever since. I LOVE IT!

Re: Why, Where, When?

Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 6:27 PMI learned it from some kids down the block when I was young. I think they picked it up from relatives they had in Colorado. It was funny they spoke that way, because their parents were English with English accents and rather proper though in a mutating 70s way. Then in later years, after college, I lived with a housemate from Georgia who had a gracious, gorgeous, charming way of speaking and I let some of it rub off onto me. But I always thought it was useful to have a specifically plural word available if I needed it. -

Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 6:50 PMThat's why Yuni and I started this tribe.
I'm a Yankee through and through. But there is a need in English for a 2nd person plural, and y'all is more realistic than any other option.
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 6:51 PMIt really is a useful word. Why more people don't use it? I just don't know. Well I gotta get going. Ya'll take care now! -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 12:05 AMWell I got it from the army and from my southern brethren (south philly that is!)

Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 7:58 AMYeah, I'm one of those from Colorado. But I might have picked it up when I was in school in Tennessee. Course...they youins, too. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 7:59 AMI meant...they SAY yoins too. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 8:49 AMYoins? Like YOU-ins or yoyns? It's another kind of 2nd person plural?
I've never heard of it! Is it used the same way as y'all or are there other grammatical rules? -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 2:34 PMNaw...it is just like...are youins going to the dance tonight? Course...it might be more like...yuns. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 2:35 PMLike...are yuns (all you people) going to the dance tonight? -

Re: Why, Where, When?
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 8:07 AMGosh, I hate to burst your bubble here, but Y'all is singular and All Y'all is plural.
Most of my relatives are from the South, and I lived in Texas for fourteen years.
So, if you're speaking to an individual, Y'all is perfectly proper. If you're speaking to a group, then you need to say All Y'all. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 9:06 AMhmmm I have seen it used both ways. y'all can also mean you all thus eliminating the need for all y'all though that is a commonly used term. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 9:30 AMI've heard all y'all used for several groups of people, several y'alls. Say, several families and you're talking to them all. All y'all.
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, May 14, 2005 - 7:06 PMI picked it up when I grew up in Colorado. Been picked on a lot when I lived in Michigan. -

Re: Why, Where, When?
Sat, May 14, 2005 - 8:57 PMHi Mabra! Welcome to the little tribe!

Re: Why, Where, When?
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 9:57 AMIn addition, All Y'alls, is plural possesive.
But maybe that's just a Texas thing. Although I have friends from Georgia and Alabama that use the various forms of Y'all the same way that I do. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:26 PMI've seen southerners get very irate when a movie with a southern guy uses y'all to refer to a single person. They're all: "Those Hollywood people don't know southerners from Adam's off-ox!" or some such.
So, you're saying that's actually correct usage. There's a conflict here. Anyone? -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:36 PMI think it is plural.
but i use it ocassionally collectively even thought i'm speaking to one person. I'm implying that the statement applies to the person i'm talking to - and others. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:47 PMI think so too.
Ceylonna: you're wrong. :P
;)

Re: Why, Where, When?
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:56 PMmebbe - remeber we're talkin about a colloquialism here...different dialects from different locations...
look at were everybody thinks they picked y'all up.
colorado, tennessee, hee haw, tv, texas...
everybody COULD be right depending upon accepted usage where ever they picked it up.
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Fri, June 3, 2005 - 10:30 AMI'm not wrong for the part of the country that I live in.
The forms that I've listed are the forms that are commonly used here. I certainly can't speak for what's considered proper for the rest of the country. ;-} -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 3:01 PMI'm just pulling your leg, Ceylonna. I know :) You're righteous! -

Re: Why, Where, When?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 9:13 PMHey y'all,
I agree-
>Y'all is singular and All Y'all is plural.<
however when addressing a group i usually just say y'all.
I'm from Kansas. this is proper when talking about a group to say all y'all.
such as, "All y'all better get over ear and drink dishere beer for it gets warm."
(sadly i'm not exagerating by much - its hot now. beer gets warm fast.)
And for the past few years i've been teased and laughed at for slipping when saying y'all. which comes out mostly when i'm tired or angry or lazy or... impaired by substances we won't talk about.
Its very nice to find a group of people so interested in my culture and its vernacular.
So thanx y'all,
i gotta get-er-dun now,
1 luv, t.

Re: Why, Where, When?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 9:40 PMBwahahahaha! I used to live in Kansas too (yeah I know, is there anyplace that I haven't lived). My aunt and uncle live in North Kansas City off of Vivion Road. Anyway, I digress...I first picked up my love for y'all when I lived in Kansas. Your right, the beer does get warm fast this time of year. That is all, I'll quit rambling now.

Tue, June 21, 2005 - 9:02 PM
Howdy folks!
I lived most of my life in Texas, almost all of that in Arlington. Talk about Suburbia! My parents still live just south of Sublet, not far from Mansfield. -
-
Re: The Sage in Bloom!
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 9:16 PMMy inlaws live just North of Sublett near Mansfield. What a very small world y'all! My husband used to be the choir director at the Kennedale United Methodist Church.

Re: Why, Where, When?
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 4:40 PMWe're headed for Las Cruces to visit with my hub's brother, wife and kids. Their oldest girl is 15 and is having her, now let me get this right,
quinceanera
in July. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 4:46 PMClose - it's quincinera, I think. I haven't been to Las Cruces yet, but I've heard that it's beautiful. If you haven't made the drive before, it's pretty damn boring until you hit New Mexico.
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 4:53 PMQuincenera... LC is great, used to spend some time there... nicer drive through NM than TX... unless you wanna see a Petroleum Museum... LOL -

Re: Why, Where, When?

Re: Why, Where, When?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:38 AMActually Ceylonna we may be driving through Albuquerque on our way out there I want to stop in old Albuquerque if we have time. Any other places we should visit? We probably won't have much time. -
-
Re: Why, Where, When?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 9:42 PMDefinitely hit Old Town in ABQ if you have time. Send me an email and I'll let you know specifics on the best places to eat, visit, etc. If you'll be going through Santa Fe or Taos, let me know that as well, I can hook you up there too.
