First debate which is it? Y'all or Ya'll? If we are to officially enter this word into the English language we are going to have to first establish the proper spelling.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 12:26 PMY'all is a contraction of you all.
ya'll is a contraction, but of what? "yak will"? "yam shall"? ya'll. Dunno whas it.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 8:58 PMYa'll is an irregular noun so that is why the weird contraction. But if you sound it out it is not y-all it is ya-all -

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 9:34 PMI say both forms are correct?
You is the plural of thou and also the polite form of singular thou, but with inflation of politeness and formality thou lost favor except with Shakespeare. So now we are left with only plural you so that now we need another one.
What about "all y'all"?
What about youse? Should we start another tribe for that one? Or bring it into the house of y'all? or drop it? -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 6:36 PMIf "youse"ers want a tribe, of course they should have one, but I'd be happy to include them. I use "youse" myself, though not as much as "y'all".
I also use "thou" as a singular, familiar form, but only among people I know fairly well. (It makes me think of poems and paintings.) -

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, May 30, 2005 - 5:00 PM>> I also use "thou" as a singular, familiar form, but only among people I know fairly well.
Wow! Are thou a Quaker?
Do you say 'thou art' or 'thou are'? -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 1, 2005 - 12:25 AMI usually say, "How art thou?"
-

-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 2:22 PMI like youse.
I vote for having its own tribe.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 6:28 AMReally though I have been noticing that some people write y'all and others write ya'll. come on ya'll tell me why you have the preference? ya'll just flows better to me for some reason. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 6:41 AMIn the rules for English grammar, usually the apostrophe stands in for letters taken out of a contraction as in hadn't for had not or I've for I have.
In this case its a contraction for you all so it would be y'all.
Although since y'all isn't grammically correct itself, I don't suppose it makes any difference at all, y'all.

-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 1:09 PMI'm with Zareen on that one, but ya'll is the way a lot of southerners like it.
-
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 9:35 PMI don't know what is correct. I just know that when my friends and relatives who still live in the deep South write to me, they all use y'all. Maybe ya'll is good for some, and y'all is good for others. I don't know if it's related to geography or personal preference.
I do agree with Zareen about the whole contraction thing, and that's probably why I prefer y'all. After all, the contraction is supposed to stand for 'you all'; so why wouldn't the apostrophe come after the y instead of the a?

Wed, June 22, 2005 - 1:56 PMactually, i love it when it protracted to a long honey-slow yeeeewaaahllll
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Sat, June 25, 2005 - 5:11 PMya'll is the proper contraction for "ya will" right? -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Sat, June 25, 2005 - 6:23 PMThat would certainly make sense - grammatically speaking. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 4:36 AMi think that's you'll, which ain't correct, but used.
and when i want to say 'you all will' it comes out y'all 'll as in "y'all 'll meet up with me later"

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 6:00 AMI think the assumption is that you all has to be y'all rather than ya'll to be close to proper grammar rules but why not ya'll?
Do Not is: Don't NOT Do'nt
Will Not is: Won't NOT W'ont
so why not Ya'll instead of y'all? -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 10:50 AMLIke I said before, personal preference and geography play into it. But don't does make sense gramattically since the ' is where the o would be in not. Don't = Do Not. Do'nt wouldn't make sense since the ' is supposed to stand in the place of the missing letter or letters. (Sorry I was an English Geek in college). I don't know the entymology of won't, so I can't explain that on. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 10:51 AMSorry gramattically, should have been spelled gramatically, and on at the end should have read one.
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 8:46 AMIsn't won't: would not? As in, I would not be the one to water the lawn. I won't water the lawn.
(I use y'all.) :) -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 8:51 AMI think y'all is consistent with other contractions, tho not (yet) any more grammatically correct than ya'll.
If we ever make a policy statement, I think it should be to promote y'all, with ya'll as an acceptable regional variation.
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 11:00 AMwouldn't is the contraction for would not. won't is the contraction for will not. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 12:00 PMI'm a goon... yes, you're right. No more posting for me when I'm more asleep than awake... *blushblush*... COMPLETELY forgot about wouldn't. I'm gonna go hide in a corner now.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 10:55 AMI have a friend whose young son has a habit of saying amn't instead of am not. I have kind of grown fond of it. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 10:57 AMNow that's cute, I may have to try amn't. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 29, 2005 - 7:18 PMFrom an email from a friend today in Missouri (Missourah?):
"Hey yal, wanted to let you know that GarageStock is
the July 21st-24th."
So, uh, wtf? I suppose some users of the y'all/ya'll don't care for grammar at all! ;) -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Wed, June 29, 2005 - 7:56 PMNow that is just plain wrong ya'll! -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 9:29 AMI think we should drop the apostrophe altogether. Just have it be yall or yal.
Or Y + AWL.
yawl.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 9:31 AMI think Rendall may be on Crack Ya'll!!!! -

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 9:55 AMOK Following the rules of grammar I am still making a push for Ya'll over y'all. The ya in ya'll is to replace you. As in "nice to meet ya" or "ya aint gotta go home, but ya gots to get the fuck out of here!" ....so that makes the apostrophe replace the a in all hence Ya'll. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:04 AMI'm still pushing for the apostrophe after the y, just cause in the South y'all stands for you all, not ya all. I've always thought that the apostrophe replace the ou in you. To me it just makes sense to keep all as one word - since that's part of the contraction. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, cause it doesn't look like either of us are going to change our opinion. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:09 AMHee hee!! I just it is fun to debate over grammar about something so grammatically incorrect! -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:13 AMbut I will say that in a traditional contraction it is typically the second word that gets a letter or letters replaced.
example;
Can not - Can't.
Do not - Don't
am not - amn't
:) -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:15 AMLove amn't. I'm going to start using it myself, hehe!
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:16 AMRight, but the apostrophe is still replacing the missing letter(s).
-
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:13 AMMy thoughts exactly! Although, I don't know if y'all (or ya'll) is quite as bad as aint. -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:16 AMyeah aint does not follow any rules at all. That aint right ya'll! -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 4:34 PMI read somewhere that ain't used to be used by everyone including the upper class until the first dictionary came out in the late 1700s/early 1800s, declaring it nonstandard (or whatever the equivalent term).
The upper class stopped using it, but the lower class kept on.
I heard an argument that ain't will never be accepted as anything but nonstandard usage, even though everyone uses it, because it's similar to a swear word: people, including academics, like to have reference to a 'down home' authenticity.
"As to facilitating that irresponsible fallacy: It ain't gonna happen.'"
If ain't became standard usage, that sentance wouldn't have any "street" cachet.

Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 4:36 PMThat's fascinating. I know this is y'all-centric, but as for ain't, what I love the most about it is that it works for any conjugation of the verb.
I ain't. You ain't. They ain't. We ain't. etc. Ain't that grand y'all? -
-
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 6:36 PMThat is very grand indeed riverlife. That is one trait that some would say that ain't and y'all share. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Y'all or ya'll?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 7:21 PMOooh, nice! Yeah, except for the we and they, I see your point.
"Ya'll's lookin' good today," I've heard that many times to mean, "Hey, you, yeah, *you*, Freddy, you're lookin' good today." So, ok, I made that up, I've never known a guy named Freddy who anyone called ya'll. So let's make it more believeable and use the name Heather. Work with me. Ergo, "Ain't ya'll lookin' mighty fine today"
"Ya'll's lookin' good today." As in, "Hey, Freddy and Heather, you two are lookin' sharp today." So, "Ain't ya'll lookin' perty today?"
